Agyekumwaa Studios Marks One Year: The Story Is Just Beginning

ONE YEAR IN. THE STORY IS JUST BEGINNING.

Agyekumwaa Studios marks its first anniversary today, 1st October, 2026, celebrating a year of creating, building, and establishing the foundation for a growing creative studio across film, podcasting, and digital content.

In the past year, the studio developed original productions, expanded its digital presence, and built platforms that connect storytelling with the wider creative ecosystem.

A YEAR OF FILM AND STORYTELLING

One of the studio's key productions has been UNREAD, a short film written and directed by Akua Agyekumwaa and produced by Agyekumwaa Studios.

In 2026, UNREAD received official selections from the Rivers International Film Festival, Iowa African Film Festival, and Silicon Valley African Film Festival.

At the Rivers International Film Festival, the film also received three nominations: Overall Best Documentary, Best Short Film, and Best Documentary Story.

The festival journey has allowed UNREAD to reach audiences and film communities across Africa and North America.

HISTORY ON TRIAL

The studio also developed History on Trial, a 52-episode series exploring the Rawlings era in Ghana through historical documentation based on reports from the National Reconciliation Commission.

Five episodes have been published so far, with the series continuing weekly and published on every Sunday, at 17:00 GMT.

Available in both video and podcast formats, History on Trial extends the studio's storytelling into historical and documentary-style content while letting audiences engage with the series across platforms.

BUILDING BEYOND PRODUCTIONS

Agyekumwaa Studios' first year has also been about building platforms around its creative work.

The studio has built Melanin Luxe (@the.melaninluxe), a platform dedicated to celebrating Black women in the film ecosystem, highlighting their work, creativity and contributions to the industry.

Ajxé Media is also taking shape as a media arm focused on film festivals, filmmakers, behind-the-scenes experiences, events and the wider film and cultural ecosystem.

The studio is further developing a student and recent graduate volunteer database, creating opportunities for emerging creatives to gain practical experience on film sets and participate in productions as they begin building their careers.

WHAT COMES NEXT

As the studio enters its second year, its slate continues to grow.

Currently in development is Shadows in the Water, a six-part psychological crime drama designed as a web series. Each approximately 10-minute episode can stand independently while connecting to form one feature-length story.

The series follows a detective investigating a fatal crash, gradually uncovering deception, infidelity and buried truths. As the investigation unfolds, the circumstances surrounding the collision reveal deeper struggles involving mental health, grief and unhealed family trauma.

The coming year will also see the continued development of Ajxé Media, the studio's creative platforms and opportunities for emerging filmmakers.

Agyekumwaa Studios enters its second year with a growing body of work, an expanding creative ecosystem and more stories waiting to be told.
